History

Or, Our Origin As Seen Through the Eyes of the Webmaster:

As far as I have been able to gather, the roots of what came to be known as "Room Party X" are firmly planted in the antics of Julie and Steve (Emeraldas and Harlock) during Otakon '98. I guess they went around with a group of people and a fistful of noisemakers (you know, the things you blow at parties). I hope to get Julie and Steve to write up a history from their perspective, seeing as how they created this whole bloody thing (no, I had no hand in creating Room Party X, nor would I ever claim such a thing . . . as far as I know, I only named it RPX and set up our web presence). (Oh, and Julie, I will bring noisemakers to Otakon 2000!!)

I got involved in what became RPX in an odd way . . . ah yes, I am remembering it now . . .

~shimmery wave of dreamland effect here~

Matthew (oh yes, we also switched to third person) had just completed an utterly healthy dinner of chips and Dr. Pepper at the Con Suite, and was about to head down to the "rave" when the doors to his intended elevator opened only to reveal . . . a packed elevator. A common sight at the Sheraton, and probably the Hyatt, too (we all love how the Sheraton closed down half their elevators right after the cosplay, right??). So Matthew turns, dejected, to press the button again when a young lady yelled out "PARTY AT HYATT ROOM 755!," followed by a chorus of people yelling "BE THERE!" Excited, Matthew ran to fetch his best friend Glenn. A party was much better than the "rave."

So Glenn and Matthew arrive at the Hyatt, and while there run into the group from the elevator. No dice, the group says, the party's gone. Dammit, Matthew thinks, looks like the "rave" for me. But, lo! Suddenly someone screamed a room number and they all made a mad dash to that room . . . only to find the room packed beyond capacity. Dammit again! But they were not discouraged; the entourage started roaming. And so now they were a roaming party, sweeping up anyone who passed. They grew to fifty people at one point . . . quite possibly the largest party at Otakon '99. Through the night and into the morning this motley crew went on a number of adventures (and/or misadventures), most of which are chronicled in the "accomplishments" section of this site.

~shimmery wave ends here~

So now we are Room Party X, the Roaming Room Party. Any time members of the mailing list end up at an anime convention, they at least try to spark up a RPX. Otakon, however, will always be our mainstay . . . so be prepared to roam with us at Otakon 2K!
